Pauline Smith is a landscape and garden designer
with a background in education.
“In a former life, I was a primary school teacher. To cut a long story short, I attended a course to learn more about the importance and benefits of outdoor learning. This is where I met the wonderful and inspiring Juliet Robertson, of Creative STAR Learning fame. In fact, so inspired was I, that after 16 years in the classroom I decided to retrain as a garden designer, with a plan to create exciting and challenging playgrounds where children could play and learn at the same time.
While studying for my diploma, I found that not only was I passionate about gardens for children, I actually loved designing all styles of gardens and outdoor spaces. So, though I specialise in creating spaces for children, I am also more than happy to design and create gardens in any style.”
“For me, garden designing is about bringing spaces alive. It’s about walking outside and stepping into a different world, shrugging off the day – being in a space you enjoy.”
“With the Curriculum for Excellence, there’s now a push on schools to make sure that their young people are given opportunities to take part in creative and enjoyable activities outdoors. Having been a teacher, I know the realities of taking a class of children outside and trying to maintain their interest."
“I know what children want outside and I also know what makes it easier for teachers too. Creating spaces where kids can climb, build dens and play with water and sand, and where teachers can teach, is what we do.”
“We work closely with the schools to make sure that we create a playground that the children want, it’s for them so their input is key. And we’re often asked to work with groups of kids, sometimes even whole schools, involving them in things like planting, or building bug hotels. It’s important that the children are involved in the process as much as possible, right from the start, so that they’ll take ownership of the space and look after it.”
If you’re looking to make changes in stages rather than a full on transformation, we can help on a consultancy basis offering advice, practical help, contacts for suppliers etc.
For larger projects, we also offer a project management service. Schools and playgroups often find that they don’t have the time or resources to commit to managing a large scale project, so as well as working with you to create a design, we can organise for the work to be done too.
We offer a range of services, including project management.
